How Large a Border on 13x19 Prints Fine Art

Print Sizes on 13x19?

Impress Sizes on 13x19?

Hobbyist photographer here, recently dabbling in selling prints. Wondering what size image folks typically like to print on 13x19 fine art papers?

12x18 seems like an obvious choice but my printer forces a 30mm border on fine art papers. Would love some thoughts on preferred print and border sizes, either what is standard, or what you love visually, or what your find sells or... whatever thoughts really- I feel like I'k melting my brain working out all the mathematical options when it's probably more of an artistic question.

Thanks for any give-and-take!

Re: Impress Sizes on 13x19?

I think y'all need to enquire yourself what y'all expect your clients to do with the impress.

If it is to be framed, what amount of environs to the epitome is required ?

If it is a block mountain  with affluent edges , where the printed image is stuck to a piece of dumbo material and sealed.... then no border to minimal for a tight trim.

If the print is to sit confronting the glass flush to the farme, so one/4 of an inch all round will disappear behind the rebate of the framing wood.

If y'all intend to identify a card matt over the print , then there are several options ... firstly is there an amount of white paper to exist shown before the bevell of the card mount ?  To secure the print behind the mount window will crave at to the lowest degree half an inch of the print behind the card.

I might choose to have one-half an inch of art plain paper surrounding the image , then half an inch to secure the print backside the card window, thus this requires 2 inches added to the print dimensions in both vertical and horizontal dimensions. This would mean that with an A3 printer the widest possible printed surface area would exist eleven inches.  Guess why I chose A2

I don't think in that location'southward a right or wrong answer, simply what you lot retrieve works best for the detail prototype, in the context of how you will display or at least view the print. I retrieve anything from borderless to 1/3 top/left border, 1/3 image, one/3 lesser/right border is pretty common.

The only modifiers are that it is more common / customary to leave enough edge to facilitate framing with the over-mat showing some unprinted white space; and that if yous program on framing with pre-made frame kits, and so you need to print for the size of the opening in the precut over-mat.

If y'all are on a Windows estimator the application Qimage Ultimate has a way to overcome the Canon imposed 30mm border on Fine Art papers.

Re: Print Sizes on 13x19?

Standard commercially available mats for a 12 x eighteen print are always cutting with an opening that'south smaller, i.e. an actual 11.five x 17.five. Therefore for such a mat I impress  11.half-dozen x 17.65, or something a little more than generous simply which will not waste a lot of image. This your printer will not object to.
Incidentally most printers have a paper quality on which they will impress to the border. it's possible to tell a little lie to your printer nearly the paper to obtain this.

Hullo,

I print 11x14 on 13x19 paper. That's all. I stick with the traditional sizes of prints. 5x7, 8x10, 11x14, 13x19, 16x20. I frame the shot so I can crop the image to the impress aspect ratio. At present, for a 13x19 impress, I utilize 17x22 paper (and as well for 16x20 prints).

One affair I find customers similar is a faux mat. This where I centre an 11x14 print on the 13x19 paper so they can use the larger frame sans mat nonetheless it looks like information technology has a mat.

KevinBPhoto :

12x18 seems like an obvious selection simply my printer forces a 30mm border on fine art papers.

As mentioned, the Qimage work-around is an constructive method for eliminating 30mm imposed borders. A quick and dingy option is to choose  standard matte paper in the commuter, which will let yous to print any size edge.

The situation is different for a Pro-10 pigment printer, however, because choosing the standard matte media setting will forbid the printer from using MK ink. The only solution, in this instance, is to implement the Qimage strategy, which I have proven to work 100%.

Re: Impress Sizes on 13x19?

Thanks for the thoughts. For sure A2 would exist a more

versatile option, but alas A3+ is the widest I tin go.

Re: Print Sizes on 13x19?

Cheers Stan. I think I'm leaning your mode. Question. When you print 11x14 on 13x19 do you lot trim your length at all or get out your side borders wider than peak and bottom?

Re: Print Sizes on 13x19?

Hi,

Ane style, I trim information technology to the 11x14 using a RotaTrim and then it can fit in an 11x14 frame. The other way, I heart the 11x14 within the 13x19 sheet and so it can mountain in a 13x19 frame.

Re: Print Sizes on 13x19?

I avoid printing edge to edge because of what I've read near the issue of overspray gunking upwardly the inside of the printer, at least on Canon printers. So on the PRO-100 I impress upwards to 12x18, on the PRO-1000 16 (or 16.5) x something, etc.

I exercise pretty much what Stan does... I use 13x19 newspaper for 11x14 prints.

If these are going to be used 'bare' (i.due east. non with a mat) I will trim them to have a compatible 1" border on all four sides. If the print is going in a matt (and somewhen a frame), I don't bother trimming because no torso volition see the departure.
